Frequently Asked Questions

How does LiveScan technology work?

LiveScan digital technology lets Fingerprint Technicians obtain precise scans of fingerprints using a clean scanner plate. Optical scanning captures high-resolution images with a light source and camera. These images can be printed onto fingerprint cards, saved as encrypted EFS files, or transmitted electronically to an authorized recipient.

Who needs LiveScan fingerprinting?

LiveScan fingerprinting is often required for background checks for various reasons, including employment, licensing, and certain types of volunteer work.

Specific requirements depend on the requesting agency and the purpose of the request.

How are digital fingerprints kept confidential?

Fingerprints scans that are printed onto fingerprint cards are not saved on our system.

Fingerprint scans that are immediately electronically transmitted to authorized agencies are first converted into a mathematical representation, aka a template. These templates are then encrypted using strong encryption algorithms before being securely transmitted directly to the proper authorized recipiennt.

What should I do before getting my fingerprints taken?

Before getting your fingerprints taken:

  • Bring a valid, unexpired photo ID (e.g., driver’s license, passport) and any required documents or preferred fingerprint card (FD-258 cards provided).
  • Ensure your hands are moisturized, but avoid greasy lotions.
  • Do not wash your hands or use hand sanitizer before the appointment.
  • Inform the technician of any cuts, dry skin, or other hand conditions.
